Focusing On The Conservation of Ecosystems, Habitats & Wildlife

“Don’t Go Into The Ocean Until Thursday”

How many times have we heard this?

Today on the local news…it was advised that it wasn’t safe to go in some parts of the ocean until Thursday!

For those of you who are not aware of the “Garbage Patch” in the Pacific….watch this video!

Did you know:  The GARBAGE PATCH IS TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS….which equals 7 MILLION TONS of floating plastic waste!!!!

What will it look like in 5 years……10 years from now…..possibly 3 States the size of Texas perhaps?

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED TO THE OCEAN.

“I can’t imagine if I was a fish or a bird searching for food in the Ocean today.”

Weeping Willows……

Have you ever been touched so deeply by the presence of nature  ………………     or maybe even just a Tree?

I was very young when I recognized and realized that trees were truly special.   I used to climb the Evergreen Trees around my parents house like a monkey and sit at the top of them for hours….and observe the world below.  My favorite tree though…..was the Weeping Willow Tree that sat right outside my window while I was growing up.  This was the most magical tree that I have ever known during my existence here on Earth.  Today, I share with you….my special tree.

My Special Weeping Willow Tree

I think of you often…..my special tree…..

So….why do some trees get chopped down?  Are they just in the way?  When I hear a chainsaw….I cringe….I can’t imagine how I would feel….. having my happy home/habitat hacked down one day …..for what purpose?

I encourage each one of you to develop your connection with nature today…..go outside…..lean up against a tree…..listen to the wind…..tune in…..and stay connected.

Please NOTE:  This is not my Tree….it was just a visual….of a healthy tree being hacked down for whatever reason…not sure.

Great Barrier Reef in Trouble: Chinese Oil Spill in Restricted Waters

I was horrified to see this Easter morning that a 755-foot Chinese owned bulk coal carrier rammed into the Great Barrier Reed earlier today.  I can’t even imagine the devastating damage that may occur to this ecosystem with this oil spill.

Even though coral reefs only cover approximately 1% of the world’s oceans, it provides homes to about 25% of all identified marine species.

Chinese Coal Ship Stranded West of Queensland state

The greatest threat now is that this vessel has almost 300,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil on the ship to run its engine which could end up in the Pacific Ocean.  The Australian authorities are doing everything possible to limit the impact of this incident.  A CNN quick summary broadcast below.

Doing Good for our EARTH on This Good Friday

Are you ready to change the way you live your life….for the Greater Good…For EARTH?

Climate Change can be solved and you can reduce your carbon emission to zero.

Here’s how to start: Go to http://www.climatecrisis.net or TRY and attempt to:

NOTE:  These suggestions were found while I was watching the documentary “aninconvenient truth” A Global Warning.

* Buy energy efficient applicances and lightbulbs

* Change your thermostat (and use clock thermostats) to reduce energy for heating and cooling

* Weatherize your house, increase insulation, get an energy audit

* Recycle

* Buy a hybrid car

* When you can, walk or ride a bike

* Where you can, use light rail and mass transit

* Tell your parents not to ruin the World that you will live in

* If you are a parent, join with your children to save the World they will live in.

* Switch to renewable sources of energy

* Call your power company to see if they offer green energy…if not ask them why not

* Vote for Leaders who pledge to solve this crisis…….write to congress or run for congress if they don’t listen

* Plant TREES – lots of Trees

* Speak up in your community

* Call radio shows and write newspapers

* Insist that America freeze CO2 emissions and join international efforts to stop global warming

* Reduce our dependence on foreign oil – help farmers grow alcohol fuels

* Raise fuel economy standards – require lower emissions from automobiles

Changing Habits: Paper or Plastic?

“Changing Habits for Habitats”

How many times have you heard “Paper or Plastic” and which one is better for our habitat and health?  The truth is, they are both Killing us!

What does it take to change are own Habits?

When will we ever learn?  When will we start demanding change?

When will it be too late?  Will we continue to allow our forests to be hacked down…..our water to be polluted and contaminated….our food to be poisoned with pesticides….our natural resources to be striped beyond salvation.

Our climate crisis is more serious than ever now and it’s critical that we participate in making the right choices for the Future of the EARTH.

ASK YOURSELF TODAY………

How can I change my habits before I contribute in destroying my own Habitat?

REMEMBER…..IT’S OUR CHOICE………

I LOVE this Short Film “Plastic Bag” by Ramin Bahrani

Please Watch this Video….. and Attempt To Change One Small Habit Today That Will Help SAVE Our Habitat For The Future!

Would you believe ONLY 1 percent of plastic bags are recycled worldwide — about 2 percent in the U.S.

To read the article “Plastic Bags Are Killing Us” (CLICK HERE or on photo below).

Plastic Bags Are Killing Us

According to the Environment Programme, “Floating bags can look all too much like tasty jellyfish to hungry marine critters. According to the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, more than a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die every year from eating or getting entangled in plastic. The conservation group estimates that 50 percent of all marine litter is some form of plastic. There are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean.”

Deforestation Is Devasting

What is happening to the Forest?  Who’s protecting it now?

I read an article today (Replanting The Rainforest.Org) that mentioned despite conservation efforts, deforestation continues at an alarming rate of 50,193 square miles per year which equals to approximately 36 football fields a minute!  Can you imagine?

So, is anyone asking WHY? Is it possible to stop this momentum of devastation?  Given the rate at which climate change is happening, no country can afford to neglect its forests.

Deputy Director General of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, IUCN, Dr. Jackson said “the continued global decline in forest area and quality, particularly in the tropics, has serious social, economic and ecological consequences.”  He does see hope for forests in the urgency of tackling global warming.  He stated, “We must seize this moment to promote the sustainable management of forests and to develop sustainable livelihoods for the people who depend on forests.”

Finally…Madagascar Reinstates Ban of Rosewood

I was sooo happy to see this ban reinstated last week on Rosewood logging and exports in Madagascar! Can you imagine….illegal logging of its NATIONAL PARKS!

Photo found on WildMadagascar.Org

Unfortuantely, over 20,000 acres of Madagascar’s rainforests were affected, including Marojejy, Masoala and Makira national parks which are some of the island’s most biologically diverse rainforests.

Andrea Johnson of EIA (Environmental Investigation Agency) wrote via email “We’re hopeful that this moratorium marks a decision by the transition government to consider the long-term value of Madagascar’s natural resources and end the uncontrolled exploitation of the forest for quick profit.”  She also said  “We’d like to believe this is actually the beginning of a new book, not just the start of another chapter in the recent sad story of corruption and plunder of Madagascar’s irreplaceable forests.”

Hanging On To The Orangutan Habitats

Is anyone wondering….What in the Wildlife is going on in Indonesia and What happen to the Forest?  Who’s protecting it now?

The need for cheap Palm Oil is Devastating the Rainforest in Indonesia.

Palm Oil, a key ingredient in many of Nestle’s products are produced from the destroyed rainforest which are homes of the last orangutans in Indonesia.

Greenpeace has accused Nestle of using palm oil from Indonesia’s largest palm oil producer, Sina Mas, which it says is clearing orangutan habitats and breaking Indonesian law in order to expand production.  Nestle uses 320 000 metric tons of the world’s global production of 42 million metric tons of palm oil.

During the last 50 years, over 74 million hectares of Indonesia’s forest have been destroyed – logged, burned, degarded, pulped -and its products shipped round the planet (Telegraph.co.uk,).

Greenpeace asks Nestle to give rainforests a break in this Video.  Check it out.
